Hunt smart, not hard.
Every word hides exactly once, in any of eight directions. Scanning with a system beats staring.
Rare letters first
Scan for a word’s least common letter — Q, Z, X, J, K. A word with a Q is found the moment you find the Q. With no rare letter, scan for an uncommon pair (like the double letters in BEETLE).
Long words are easy words
Find the 8–9 letter words first: fewer places fit them, and their found path lights up landmarks for the short ones. Short words (4 letters) are the real needles — save them for last, when the grid is familiar.
Systematic direction sweeps
For a stubborn word, find every copy of its first letter and check the 8 directions from each — clockwise, every time. On harder days remember words also run backwards: scanning for the last letter doubles your entry points.
Row-scan for horizontals
Read each row left-to-right as one string of letters — horizontal words (and reversed ones) pop out at reading speed. Then read the columns top-to-bottom. Diagonals are last because they’re the slowest for human eyes.
In 1v1: triage
Racing an opponent, don’t chase one stubborn word. Bank all the easy finds first — every found word shrinks the effective grid for the rest.
